The magic of pattern mixology

Pattern

There is a beauty to pattern mixology.

It can absolutely transform a person’s appearance, to brazenly mix patterns and shirk any traditional conventions of fashion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an avid admirer or neutrals, colour-blocking, and myriad other forms of fashion experimentation.

Pattern mixing has a special place in my heart, though. I can recall being in high school and timidly attempting some pattern mixology. When I was younger, I tended to wear simple jeans, T-shirts, and flats — a very wall-flower wardrobe. I wanted to be more adventurous, to pair stripes and florals with reckless abandon. But I would try to pair a leopard with a floral, only to chicken out.

Now, I adore mixing prints. And while I used to think that there were rules to pattern mixology, I now think that you can wear as many patterns as you have in your closet. I have days where I’ll try to stuff as many prints into one outfit as I can. Life’s too short for wall-flower wardrobes. I don’t pile on the prints every day, but when I do it’s a “more is more” policy.

If you’re going to try out some pattern mixing, I would recommend:

  • Getting some inspiration — from Pinterest, from magazines, or from this post — to figure out how you like to mix prints.
  • Going to thrift stores to get patterns for cheap. It’s fair to splurge on a statement piece, but grab cheaper dresses, scarves, sweaters, shirts, skirts, and trousers to mix. I recently bought a higher priced leopard print coat that I adore, but I love mixing it with the printed dresses and shirts I’ve bought from Value Village.
  • Having fun with it! Not everyone will dig it — some people will definitely think you forgot to check the mirror before leaving your home — but fashion should be playful. Don’t take it too seriously.

Catch this inspiration for pattern mixing. Whether you want to go big, small, or a mishmash of it all — this fashion inspo has got you covered. All of the photos are linked back to Pinterest, where I found them.
