A spicy twist on the traditional old fashioned

One cozy Sunday, I met up with a few of my lovely pals for an afternoon of sippin’ cocktails and makin’ bouquets. We met at Studio Full Bloom, just off Venables in East Vancouver, to gather shoots of eucalyptus, pine, and oxblood red flowers. We snipped stems and sorted through fragrant flora, while drinking a delicious, spicy old fashioned.

My wonderful friend Katherine is a mixologist master, and she whipped together these apple cider old fashioneds like it weren’t no thang. Read on for the recipe, and some photos from our toasty time.

APPLE CIDER OLD FASHIONED
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • a few shakes of angostura bitters
  • 2 shots bourbon (we used Jim Bean Kentucky Straight)
  • small splash of apple juice
  • ice cubes
  • sliced apple and orange, for garnish
  • cinnamon stick, for garnish

Apple cider old fashioned

Get yo’ glasses ready with 1 tsp of brown sugar and a dash of angostura bitters each. Toss in two shots of bourbon. Add in an ice cube, and a splash of apple juice, and stir it up. Garnish with cinnamon stick, and sliced apple and orange. I highly recommend enjoying this drink next to a fireplace with three beautiful pals.
